Question by /Z/: I’m embarrassed to go and shop in a health store?
I want to go to this natural health store in the city mall and buy things like stress relief and vitamin medications, however I am a very shy person and feel anxious about the whole thing. I’m 17 and paranoid the shopkeepers might think its weird for a youth to be buying those sorts of products, and paranoid I’ll be seen by people I know such as from school who will ask me what I’m doing and tell other people. I have a secret in school, that is I’m gay, so I fear what I do will be earmarked by people as ‘gay’.
So I need a way to force myself to go to the store surrounded by heaps of people of all ages who are “judging” me and when I’m in the shop, to not get anxious and be out of there without having looked around thoughtfully.

Honey, I’d go with you. But unfortunately I probably can’t. :c
Don’t worry, I get anxious about doing things myself sometimes!
Just bring along an mp3 player and crank it up to block out the sounds in your surroundings. It helps me, it might help you.
Don’t worry about the judging part. Judge back.
Best of luck!

No one is judging you. Other customers are there to purchase items they need, salespeople are there to sell items to all customers. Go shop and don’t worry.

There is nothing wrong with wanting to buy those items. If someone, God forbid : ) , should ask you what you’re doing just tell them you are getting some things to better your health. It is not “gay” to go shopping at a health store. If anything others will think it is very good for one to be interested in better health. I hope you can do it.

The situation you are in is clear. You said you are gay. You are living in a situation of fear. Fear of what will happen if you are seen in the store. That’s not the real problem is it? You are facing this every day of your life. Being gay and unable to share that fact with anyone is sad. The fear is with you all the time. The health shop is not the problem here. The health shop is your way of saying “I’m gay and I am terrified of.people finding out about it.”
It might help if you start to accept who you are. You’re a perfectly normal, friendly guy who wants to live a normal life.
Well, once you learn to accept who you are, you will be able to face others without being afraid. You will find that your self-confidence will be established. If you don’t tell anyone you’re gay, they probably won’t know, and in this day and age, quite frankly, being gay is not so bad really.

I’m gay too I know how anxious it can feel when you think people perceive you as someone who is unhappy. Because you dont want to be seen that way. It’s not that you don’t like yourself but other people’s attitudes can really make life that bit harder than it already is.
You may want to see your doctor about meds if this is affecting you. You may have social anxiety disorder or another type of anxiety problem. Do it sooner rather than later!
