Question by Michael S: Single parents how do you deal with stress and find personal time?
I’m a 36 year old widowed father of two great little boys ages 5 and 7. I often feel stressed out just because I’m always doing EVERYTHING without a break. I have no family here. Any stress reduction tips? Anything would help. Thanks!

It isn’t easy. I have my alone time when my daughter is playing and after she is in bed asleep. When she is playing in her room I grab a good book and curl up on the couch and read, after she goes to bed I run a hot bath and soak for a long time and not think about anything.

I give myself mommy time after my kids have gone to bed. In your case it would be daddy time. During my time I do things in house of course that I enjoy doing.

When it’s nicer out. I often sit on the porch and just listen to to peace and quiet.

If school is still in when it’s nice out. I also enjoy doing just about anything outside. Anything to get me out of the house.

I also find I am less stressed after my kids have all have done activities to wear themselves out.

Don’t be afraid either to have your boys help you out around the house. They can pick up their own toys, bring their own clothes to the laundry, put their own clothes away, run a vacuum, take their dishes to the sink, they can even help with dishes rinsing, drying, and putting away.

When my husband feels stressed he likes to work out. It helps him out a lot.

If you know other people with small kids, then maybe you could babysit for them sometimes and they could do the same for you. Then get yourself out for the night and have a good time.

If not then invite your mates over once your sons have went to bed. Then relax with some beers, watch a film, play cards or whatever it is you like to do. I’m a single mum and would have probably cracked up if I didn’t get nights out, or even nights in with my mates, luckily I had a lot of family who could watch my son.

And get your sons to help you do some jobs around the house. This will help you out and also teach them how to do things and be independent. It also helps to get them used to it for when they’re a bit older and can help out a lot more.

I am not sure what your boys’ bedtime is, but when they do go to bed, force yourself to take a 5 minute break and practice some relaxation techniques. Also, make realistic goals for yourself day to day. You can’t do everything in one day!

It does seem like there is never enough time but if you are to be able to carry on and continue to look after your children to the best of your ability then you simply have to make some time for yourself.
